"Bookend"
fired clay, glaze, books, plywood, wet clay
30"x30"x15"
      Additional view:

Kudos from Charles Long: "The four physical components of "Bookend" might be characters in an allegory: The finished art work, a fired and glazed ceramic blob, can't be settled on the pedestal, its proper place, its pure materiality being kept aloft by a row of art books which form a truss-like structural support. The 'book-end' of each text bears down into a second blob of unfired clay lying limp on the floor. It has no alternative but to receive a new form directed from above. Is this formless blob of wet clay being created or destroyed by these more fossilized entities? Will it evolve from its lowly birth and one day take its place on the pedestal? And then again only to become another fossil, cataloged in books, a suitable bookend (ing)?"
